SOUP TAKES KIWANIS! SOUP made history on the morning of April 14th, when nine of our members performed in the first (non-competitive) ukulele class of the 2015 London Kiwanis Festival. London is catching up to the worldwide ukulele fever!
Solo performances by Joy P., Rudy F., Lynda M. and Mark A. featured complex fingerpicking, intricate chording, a variety of strums and vocals. Joy P. and Mary Lou V. performed a duet with fabulous harmonies and finger picking, and an eight member SOUP ensemble performed“Tonight You Belong To Me” (with kazoos!) and “Wagon Wheel”. Ensemble members were Peter H., Connie B., Rudy F., Mary Lou V., Joy P., Dale H., Ellen B. and Lynda M. The adjudicator was very complimentary and provided individual and group feedback. The atmosphere was relaxed and this allowed our nerves to calm.
The exciting epilogue to this story is that the SOUP ensemble group has been invited to perform at the Kiwanis Festival Rose Bowl Competition on Friday, April 24th! We will be providing entertainment for the participants and audience while the adjudicators confer to make their final decisions about the winners.
Congratulations to all involved! Performing at Kiwanis was a new experience for most of these participants. Our hope is that next year’s festival showcases even more of our talents. If you want to push yourself towards improved solo or group ukulele performance skills, stay tuned next fall for information about how to get involved in Kiwanis. (Lynda M.)
Kiwanis Update May 28, 2015 SOUP's Kiwanis ensemble performed in the "Stars of the Festival" concert at Centennial Hall on Tuesday May 26th. The night was an extravaganza of talent that we were honoured to be a part of, and we look forward to bringing more ukulele joy to the Kiwanis festival in future years. Thanks to Joy P. and Lynda M., whose leadership made it happen! (Lynda M.)
